National Flood Forum – Project 2 Summary

Using social media to enable stakeholder communication during floods

A key uncertainty in flood events concerns information on the local incidence and impacts of flooding, essential for responders to assist local communities effectively. We will build a prototype web tool that records and maps the social media response to flood events in the UK. This tool will create a communication channel to enable institutional stakeholders and flood responders to listen to the flood-affected public and benefit from their on-the-ground observations and knowledge. We will also analyse a large database of flood-related social media content to determine the longer term impacts of flooding on affected communities.
